Alaskan in Exile
by Neil Zawicki

“The wreck is going down. Get out, before you drown.”
                                                         -Soundgarden

The rats are jumping ship, which is what happens when the ship is listing to scuppers with a broken keel. And when not even the rats have faith, there is only one conclusion.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan is the most recent member to abandon the stricken Bush Administration.  He’s one of the bigger rats, and his post as head bullshitter made it interesting to see his self-penned resignation speech. He even made sure to ladle on some cracked voice, emotional theatrics as he said, “I’m ready to move on. I’ve given it my all, sir. I’ve given you my all, sir.”

He certainly has. It takes a real mental acrobat to get up every day and figure out how to put a cool sheen on a festering pile of scandals, lies and blunders. I think even the blank-headed TV watchers of our nation were able to look up from their fatty idiot dinners and see McClellan’s act for what it is: a man afraid of ruining his career through association with a failed president. A president, by the way, who said of McClellan’s quitting:

“One of these days, he and I are going to be in rocking chairs in Texas, talking about the good ol’ days.”

So ... these are the good ol’ days. Never mind the arrogance and incompetence and the troubled educational system and rising energy costs and complete ignorance to climate change and the widows and the heartbroken mothers of the dead soldiers. These are the good ol’ days. Because on Planet Bush, it’s just a great big elitist party. It’s just another experience for a privileged little frat punk with a rich dad.

The “good ol’ days” statement illustrates that Bush just does not get it. It’s as if people are leaving the party in disgust while the host stands laughing on the coffee table while squirting beer into the air.

Regardless of whether he sees that the party is over and the ship is sinking, the Bush machine must keep perpetuating these “good ol’ days,” so it will need a new head bullshitter. Among the candidates for the position is Tony Snow of – guess what news entity? Fox News. Snow also wrote speeches for Bush’s Dad during his administration.

That’s right. Tony Snow has been polishing the GOP doorknob for long enough now that they’re thinking of putting him on the payroll. And he might be the most solid option they have. They’re going to need a person with such a numb regard for decency that there will be no thought given to slinging outlandish explanations couched in artificial logic. Anyone from Fox News will surely pack the gear for such a task. And a Fox News rat is a special kind of rat.

It is the kind that will gladly climb aboard the wreck, and get fat on the cheese.
