Get a Job

Earlier this week, my eleven-year-old stepson asked the question “what’s the difference between liberals and conservatives?” At first, I was expecting a punch line, but he really was curious about the difference. The obvious biases began to flow from my mouth, but then it occurred to me that I wasn’t actually being informative at all. I sat for a minute and then started again to rattle off rhetoric, but I then realized that the boy was looking at me blankly, and my husband was giving me a “come on, he’s only eleven look.” I stopped, and my husband plainly stated, “liberals care about all of the people, including the poor, whereas most conservatives only have rich people in mind.”

Of course a lot more could be added to the list of differences, but at least now my stepson could have a loose understanding. And it’s true; liberals do care more about the poor for the most part. I care about the poor, and when it comes to those who truly struggle to feed their families, I have great sympathy.

There is a type of poor people, however, that even gives this liberal a bit frustration. It is that person who always plays the “poor me” victim role.  I have no sympathy for those who start each sentence with “I can’t.”  This type of person also has a knack for abusing the system instead of using it.

This type of poor person gives us liberals a bad name. They are lazy, unmotivated, and often ignorant self-centered people who are doing a great job at screwing up our country even further.

I know that may seem a bit harsh, but it is these parasites who find every excuse in the book not to get a job, which makes it harder for everyone else, especially the working poor. I am the type of liberal who does care deeply about the working poor. Those who live from paycheck to paycheck are the ones who truly struggle. They work minimum wage jobs to feed their families, but still seem to constantly face debt.

The working poor are the ones getting truly screwed by the system. And they too, through taxes, are helping support those who live off the system. Don’t get me wrong, I too have suffered bouts of unemployment and it hasn’t always been easy, but I always find a job before I go completely broke and start to leach off the system.

There are people who truly need the system for help. And I do believe that a little help can go a long way. The problem is that too many people too often abuse the system. And this is what gives us compassionate liberals a bad name. The conservatives leaders know all about the “poor me victim” taking advantage, and they use it to their benefit when it comes time to cut funding from social programs.

People who play the victim and ride the system only further the conservative’s momentum.
