April 6, 2005 The
pope is waiting for me in hell. You see, I am part of what the ole
geezer
described as “a new ideology of evil.” I am a gay man that
would just love to
have some of those rights you straight folk take for granted when you
say “I
Do” at the alter or courthouse. In
his last book, “Memory and Identity”, the pope says that
homosexuality is a sin
and gay marriage “attempts to pit human rights against the family
and against
man.” As
any decent Christian will tell you, the book of Leviticus says that it
is a sin
for a man to lay with another man as he does with a woman so therefore
men who
have sex with men are going to hell. I am here to tell you that, if
that is
truly the case, then I will be able to kiss the old man’s hand
when he meets me
at the fiery gates. I
know he will be there because the pope probably wore clothing that
contained
more than one type of fiber. According to the bible, that is a sin as
well. Oh
wait, that is one of those bible rules that don’t apply to us
today. How silly
of me to take a literal view of the bible, as so many of the Christian
faith do
when speaking of homosexuality, and apply its teachings fairly and
across the
board. I
am sure many of you think the pope has, over the years, done many
things to
improve the quality of life for us all. You may say he worked hard to
knock
down the barriers between different religions and join hands with those
of
differing faiths. But I know he really just wanted to do some traveling
and get
some fresh air. What
are religions anyway but institutions that perpetuate stereotypes and
encourage
the continuation of themselves? Religion divides, plain and simple.
What gives
one church or group the right to say they know what is best? Nothing.
If you
attend a church that preaches or teaches anything other than love,
kindness,
and forgiveness, you are being brainwashed. The Rebel hosts the appropriately named 'Rebel Radio' show Friday mornings from 7-10am on KRUA 88.1fm in Anchorage. |
