| September 16, 2005 The Bramble Bush by Kevin Morford When
Reactionaries Rant
At last! Finally I have received some right wing hate mail for one of my columns. I was starting to feel so inadequate. Its not like I haven’t tried to provoke a reaction since I started writing columns earlier this year. In column after column, I have been pointing out the hypocrisies, contradictions, shortcomings and lies of the reactionary right. Yet week after week I was totally ignored, and received not so much as a peep of protest. In my column of July 29, I charged that there was an epidemic of police riots across the U.S. Nothing. On August 12, I called intelligent design “the bastard grandchild of biblical creationism.” Zilch. I mounted a frontal assault on the concept of good and evil in my August 19 column. Zip. My September 2 column likened military recruiters to pedophiles. Nada. Even a mosquito can get swatted at for crying out loud. I was beginning to doubt that I had what it takes to write a left wing column. But finally, vindication. A genuine, dyed in the wool, right wing rant directed at yours truly. Oh, the relief. I know the rant wasn’t particularly well written, or even cogent. But that’s OK. It’s one of the trademarks of the real McCoy. It’s the effort and the heartfelt sentiment that counts. It means that they’re paying attention and they care, they really care. What finally got the job done was my column of last week, which pointed out that the Bush administration had turned down an offer from Cuba of 1,200 doctors to help with hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Well, it turns out that Cuba is run by Fidel Castro, and Castro is a very bad man, so if hurricane victims had to die so that our President could thumb his nose at Castro, we have no right to question his wisdom. Oh, and by the way, I am a “left wing nut job.” I’ve never felt so proud. If mentioning communist dictators is what it takes to get a reaction, I am not above pandering. In that spirit, here is what Mao Tse-Tung said about this issue, in Chapter 2 of his classic work of literature, Quotations From Chairman Mao Tsetung: “I
hold that it is bad as far as we are concerned if a person ... is not
attacked by the enemy, for in that case it would definitely mean that
[he has] sunk to the level of the enemy. It is good if we are attacked
by the enemy, since it proves that we have drawn a clear line of
demarcation between the enemy and ourselves. It is still better if the
enemy attacks us wildly and paints us as utterly black and without a
single virtue; it demonstrates that we have not only drawn a clear line
of demarcation between the enemy and ourselves, but achieved a great
deal in our work.”
By the way, Mao Tse-Tung was a communist dictator, and I just quoted him in a manner that implies approval of something he said. So please, keep that hate mail coming, and keep it as wild and vitriolic as possible. It means that I am achieving something here. Don’t make me resort to Lenin.
