It’s been a blessed week here at Insurgent Headquarters.

This Thanksgiving, my special lady friend and I went to the Pioneer Bar.

Now, before you go and start feeling sorry for two poor, malnourished and lonesome people spending a family-oriented holiday at a bar, just hold on a sec ...

For one thing, Nova and I, like so many Alaskans, are far away from our families. Hers is in Michigan and mine is scattered all over. We did get to talk to everyone on the phone, though, before we headed out to the Pio. Second, the annual Thanksgiving spread at the Pioneer is fantastic, rivaling that of anybody’s mother’s home cooking. There was stuffing, there were mashed potatoes, there was even apple pie! Oh yeah, and turkey. And all of it was delicious. Thank you, Pioneer.

As we devoured our Thanksgiving grub at a table by the door, snow fell gently all up and down 4th Avenue. The place was packed full of people, likely away from their families too; sitting around tables, eating, talking and laughing. A college football game loomed overhead on the TV box, but no one really paid it any mind. We were having Thanksgiving.

When we’d finished our feast, I sipped a glass of wine and did a little reflecting. I guess that’s what you do around this time of year. You think of holidays past, you think of the loved ones you can’t be with, and on Thanksgiving, of course, you think of the blessings you have to be thankful for.

The newspapers and magazines have been filled with the Giving Of Thanks this week. Some are pithy or funny. Some are earnest or melancholic. There’s a great one here, by the way.

At this point, you probably know what’s coming. I’m sorry. After basking in the warm glow of a great meal in some fine company (and being aided by the aforementioned wine), I just can’t help myself.

I’m thankful for Nova and my son, Gabe. They are my family, my foundation. They also happen to be wonderful people who I get to spend every day with. I’m a lucky man.

I’m thankful for my friend Dave Armstrong, who stokes the fire and keeps me honest.

I’m thankful for insurgent49 and its crew of dedicated volunteers. They never fail to amaze me with their insight and humanity. It’s invigorating to work with a group of folks who are so alive with passion for what they do.

I’m thankful that the terms of George Bush and Frank Murkowski will soon be drawing to a close. Just had to throw that in there.

And, even though it couldn’t be much farther from my parents, my sister, my nieces and nephews ... I’m thankful that I get to live in Alaska. There aren’t a whole lot of places left in the lower 48 where you can trudge through the snow to a crowded bar on Thanksgiving and walk out with a full belly and a sense of family.

     Happy Holidays, everyone.
