| July 29, 2005 Editor’s Desk by Aaron Selbig It’s been a determined week here at Insurgent Headquarters. Normally, this space is reserved for random political potshots at such worthy targets as the Supreme Court, gubernatorial aircraft, Uncle Ted, and Disneyland. This week, however, I’d like to deliver a “State Of The Insurgency” address. Please bear with me. We are at a watershed moment for Insurgent49, my friends, and we could use your help. First, a BIG thank you for helping to make I-49 the most comprehensive progressive website in Alaska. Our web traffic continues to grow at an exponential rate along with the volume of original and insightful articles, opinions, cartoons, letters, etc. available on our site. Thank you all for your support. I am pleased to report that our plans to go to print in September are proceeding as scheduled. Design and layout of our paper (a 10,000 copy, 16-page tabloid-size monthly to be distributed throughout Anchorage, Southcentral, and beyond), has begun. Most of the content will come from the website, with a few articles and surprises to be exclusive to the paper. Content is not a problem. We have enough quality material for a year's worth of newspapers. What has been a challenge, however, is ad sales. As a matter of fact, the future of this entire project hinges on ad sales. Our marketing director, Nova Stubbs, has been working her ass off for the last month trying to convince businesses that advertising with Insurgent49 is a great opportunity. And it is ... we are offering the cheapest ad rates in town, ads placed in our paper will stick out (we will never have more ads than content, unlike so many "alternative" papers), and although our name may sound controversial, it will serve us well when we hit newsstands (who wouldn't pick up a paper called Insurgent49?) The results of Nova's efforts thus far have been encouraging. The only problem is that Nova is doing the bulk of the work by herself. WE NEED AD REPS! If we had at least a couple of people who could devote 8-10 hours a week over the next month to making phone calls and personal visits in search of advertisers, there would be no doubt that we will raise the money necessary to print the paper. Selling ads isn't as difficult or time-consuming as you may think it to be. We have excellent media kits with which to arm you, and Nova can quickly train you to answer any question about our project. And did I mention you'll get paid? That's right, we are offering a 20% commission on all ads sold. Please ... if you enjoy the content on I-49 and you're an impassioned progressive who's ready to take action for a worthwhile cause, help us get this paper out to the masses. For all the info you'll need, contact Nova Stubbs: Nova Stubbs, Marketing Director nova@insurgent49.com Insurgent Media AK P.O. Box 100997 Anchorage, AK 99510 office tel. [907] 258.7987 Also, we are always on the lookout for fresh material for insurgent49.com. If you'd like to fire off a letter to the editor or a 500-word opinion piece, it's easy and stress-relieving to do so. If you'd like to do an in-depth feature article, we'd be thrilled to have you on board. Also, we're actively seeking a new columnist and more cartoons. For more info or for story ideas, drop us an email at info@insurgent49.com, tell us a bit about yourself, and we'll get you on your way to becoming a part of the team. Insurgent49 has always been about grassroots media by and for Alaskans. No experience necessary. Finally, after a three-week hiatus, Insurgent Radio returned to the Anchorage airwaves in triumphant fashion last Saturday. If you haven't already, please check out the show (Alaska's longest running liberal talk show) on KRUA 88.1fm every Saturday from 4:00 - 7:00pm. If you have trouble picking up KRUA on your radio, you may listen online. Just go to KRUA's website (www.uaa.alaska.edu/krua), and click on the stream in the upper right-hand corner. And, if you're already a fan of Insurgent Radio, why not vote for the host in the Press Picks this year under 'Best Local Radio DJ'? I came in third last year so, who knows, maybe I can unseat Bob & Mark this time around. You may vote online at the Press website (www.anchoragepress.com). This concludes the 2005 “State Of The Insurgency” address. Thanks again to all of you for reading and supporting Insurgent49. In next year’s address, we’ll be focusing on how to transform energy produced by loose helium balloons into cans of strained beets. Chaka Khan. Regards, Aaron Selbig Editor, Insurgent Media AK |
