    Friends,

I have some good news and some bad news.

Unfortunately, the monthly print edition of Insurgent49 is going to have to go on hiatus for a while. We were unable to raise enough money to publish an issue in April and, even with an extra month of revenue-raising, we just weren’t able to maintain financial sustainability.

To all of our loyal readers, contributors, friends and supporters: I’m sorry. We really tried very hard to make a monthly newspaper work but, honestly, the deck was stacked against us from the beginning, and the obstacle of trying to pay for it with advertising from the local business community proved insurmountable in the end.

There are definitely things that we could have done better, and someday, when we inevitably charge the windmill again, we will take those lessons with us. We will also take with us the small army of ‘insurgents’ who have climbed aboard with us over the last year. I’d like to thank all of you who believed in what we were trying to do with the newspaper, especially those of you who worked with us on producing it.

And, yes ... there is some good news.

First of all, Insurgent49 will live on, in the medium we started in over a year ago... the wonderful (and inexpensive) internet. We will continue to publish news articles, opinions and political cartoons on insurgent49.com every week, and will remain dedicated to being Alaska’s most comprehensive source of progressive news and opinion. Be sure to tune in to insurgent49.com every week for new stories, new columns and new art. Also, we will soon be unveiling some long-planned overall improvements to the site, things that we have not yet had the time and manpower to accomplish. We are still always on the lookout for new contributors, too, so if you’ve got something you really want to write about or you feel you can contribute in any way, we’re here for you.

Secondly, our ‘Third Friday’ parties at Insurgent Headquarters will live on, as well. We will still bring in the bands and beer every month and hope to provide a fun, invigorating scene for progressives to gather around on those nights. ‘Third Friday’ was a complete accident, by the way, a fundraising tool that has had the side effect of being a really good time and an excellent way to meet some new folks. In the future, we would like to incorporate more social activism into our events, and hope to take a more active role in events sponsored by our fellow progressive organizations.

Finally (and this is the best news), Nova Stubbs (i49 co-founder and Marketing Director) and I are getting married on May 20th. Hurray!

And this, too, is one reason that the print edition is being put on hold. Despite the fact that we do have a lot of great people helping us, Insurgent49 has always been a mom-n-pop operation and, to tell you the truth, mom-n-pop (Nova and I) are a little tired (and more than a little broke). We have a family (one which we may want to expand someday) and our family comes first. Unfortunately, publishing the Insurgent49 newspaper has hurt us in some ways, and we have come to a point where we simply must take care of ourselves and plan for our new future together.

We will not, however, abandon what we have started here. Insurgent49.com will live on, as will ‘The Aaron Selbig Show’ and ‘Insurgent Radio’. We will continue to carry out the important task that we feel we were meant for ... providing a voice for the progressive community in Alaska. The return of the newspaper we love so dearly, however, will have to wait.

     I hope you understand.

Yours,
Aaron Selbig
