It’s been a celebratory week here at Insurgent Headquarters.April 1st marks the first birthday of Insurgent49. Don’t worry, though, we’re not going to ask you to sing (although, if you feel like sending us a present, we could use some new socks). It’s been a hell of a first year. We have accomplished much, and have seen our project grow far beyond our expectations. What started on April 1st, 2005 as a simple weekly news website has grown into Alaska’s biggest progressive newspaper. We have published more than three hundred articles, opinions, letters and cartoons in the last year, and have been told by many Alaskan progressives that we’ve filled a void in the local marketplace of ideas. Next weekend, the Alaska Press Club awards will be given out in Anchorage, and Insurgent49 is nominated for fourteen of them. We’re going to win at least one, too (smart money is on Karen Button’s Dispatches From the Middle East for Best Series). In addition, we’re honored to have been asked by the Press Club to host this year’s “after party” to conclude the awards weekend. It seems that, somewhere along the line, we’ve developed a reputation for throwing a good party (still not sure how that happened). Insurgent49 has always been, and will always be, a voice for and by our community. Our writers and artists are passionate citizens with powerful voices, and are the primary reason for our early success. There are too many of them to name here, but we salute everyone who has taken the time to write something for us. Also, to everyone who has helped us out by donating their time and energy, donating money or just showing up at our Third Friday parties: we thank you. It’s been a great first year but, before we crack open the champagne, we must think about the road ahead and the work we have left to do. Insurgent49 is at a bit of a crossroads right now. Most of the goals we set for ourselves a year ago have been accomplished, and it’s time to set new ones. On Friday, April 21st, we will be throwing a birthday bash here at Insurgent Headquarters, and you’re all invited. For directions and more info, see our events page. At 6:00pm on the same night, before the party begins, we will be holding an i49 contributors meeting. You’re all invited to that, too. Some of our core volunteers, the writers, designers and editors who work with us on a regular basis, will be presenting their ideas on what goals Insurgent49 should be setting for our second year, and how best to accomplish them. Also, we hope to sign up some new volunteers, as any grassroots project like ours needs all the help it can get. If you’ve been reading our newspaper or website for awhile, and have wanted to get involved, this will be a good opportunity to get together with us, and find out how you can use your talents to help out.
